Tip this month: Preparing your bike for riding in a winter wonderland
Water is probably one of the mountain bike's biggest enemies (along with dirt, crashes, thieves etc . . . ) Although your bike is called a 'mountain' bike, it's still a very fragile piece of machinery. When hosing down your bike in winter, be very careful in the following areas as water here can freeze and cause parts of your bike to seize up:
- The steering head bearings.
- The bottom bracket bearings. Other than the rear freewheel bearings the bottom bracket bearings (where the pedals connect) get the hardest time and need to be kept away from the water.
- The wheel bearings, shifters and inner gear cables in both the front and rear don’t do well with too much water so don’t spray the hose directly on them. Instead, use hot soapy water and a car brush to wash down your bike and dislodge the dirt. Only use the hose to wash off the soap.
Chain maintenance is also important in winter. Don’t use petrol or any other solvent to clean the dirt off your chain. There is a grease/oil that is in the inner rollers of the chain and if solvents are used they dissolve this lubricant totally, causing the chain to run dry on the inside even when oiled. This shortens the life of your chain dramatically. Instead, wipe the chain with a dry rag and if the rear cluster needs cleaning, take the rear wheel out and slide a rag through each gear. The same can be done for the big ring gear, middle gethe chain and you are away.
Your brakes can wear out in one muddy, wet ride in the winter so keep a very close eye on the condition of your brake pads during your winter riding. If you don't have the tools, patience or time to do all this yourself, take your bike down to your trusted dealer and get them to winterproof your bike. See you out there.
